Pomskies can have a standard, plush or a woolly coat. Each coat type has a soft undercoat and the 3 types differ in the length of their guard hairs.

All Pomskies shed twice a year- one to shed their thick, winter coat and the next one is to shed their thin, summer coat. This shedding helps them maintain their body temperature as the seasons change.

Brushing every few days is advised to remove any loose hair, prevent matting and to stimulate their skin cells to produce natural oils.

Their coats are naturally clean, they do not have the typical "doggy" smell and they do not need regular baths.

As long as they have a good quality diet, the guard hairs are naturally waterproof and protect the skin and undercoat. After walks in the rain, the majority of their undercoat will remain dry.

Woolly coats

Woolly coats are my favourite. I love the soft thickness of their coats and their overall look with their mane, long tail fluff and fluffy bums.

Woolly coats have longer guard hairs than the other types. In the woolly coats, I have found they shed less around the home as the guard hairs trap the shedding undercoat.

During grooming, care needs to be taken around the ears, armpits, top of inner thighs, bum fluff and around the male's genitalia as fur easily gets matted.

In our pack, Drake and Emma have lovely woolly coats. Hendrix is more woolly as he has even longer guard hairs. Raven is in between plush and woolly as she has a long fluffy tail, fluffy bum and lovely long fur around her neck.

Plush Coats

Plush coats have obviously shorter coats than the woolly coats with the shorter guard hairs. They have a lovely soft texture to their fur and can have fluffier areas around the ears, neck, and tail.

Plush coats look typically more husky than the woolly coats.

We notice their fur around the home when they shed but it is easily managed with regular grooming.

I have never seen matts form on plush coats.

Willow and Astra are our plush girls. When plush coats shed, they appear to have a standard coat due to the shedded amount of undercoat.

The second photo shows Willow (plush) next to Drake (woolly).

Standard coats

Standard coats have the shortest guard hairs. It is a very dense coat and is less maintenance than the other types. Their fur does not matt. Though they still shed fur around the home.

(I will not breed standard coats in my breeding programme)

My next blog post will cover grooming- essential tools, optional extras and the importance to regular grooming.
