Raven is a phenomenal Pomsky mum! Not only was she incredible, she blessed me with a daytime labour- something that I appreciate after tough nighttime labours.
I thought labour would start on Tuesday after a night of emptying her digestive system and bladder. It did not take long after the start of the contractions for our first puppy to make his way into the world. Enzo is our first male puppy of 2025. He had me very worried for a short while- he had swallowed a lot of fluid, was blue and gasped for air. I tried and tried for what seemed like a long time and I briefly thought that this is the puppy that I will fail to help... that feeling when they breathe on their own and you can no longer hear the raspiness and feel the fluid in their little bodies is immeasurable. I never panicked, and reassured Raven that I have got this whilst helping him (I don't want her to worry at any stage). Seeing him latch on and feed without any issue brought tears to my eyes. That feeling cannot be explained. Thankfully all the girls arrived without needing too much fluid to be removed. Strangely Eclipse, our second and last puppy also needed help to remove the large amount of fluid but he was a nice pink colour and it didn't take as long to breathe well.
They are a beautiful litter of 2 boys and 4 girls. I am a huge fan of nosebar markings especially the split nosebars and we have been gifted with quite a few husky masks with split nosebars.
I make notes of names for future litters as and when I hear one that catches my attention. I think the majority are from the Australian soaps Home and Away and Neighbours. Eden and Evie are from the soaps and in a way, I get to name our female puppies names that I would have chosen if I had had a daughter. Me and my youngest go through the list and decide who suits the names. I wanted the name Eclipse for a darker boy. I am not sure if I heard it as a name somewhere but I have had that name down for a while.
The first days weights showed that they had either gained 1g or lost a small amount (very common but I like to keep an eye on them). I could not be happier to see every puppy had gained a similar decent weight on day number 2.
Raven has me up throughout the night for toilet breaks or for food and more water. I am not getting much sleep but I am happy knowing she is recovering well. She drinks a lot, is eating but sadly not the raw food that I would like her on. I have high quality kibble and mother and puppy mousse yet I keep trying with a variety of raw meats and brands. She is drinking goats milk with pre and probiotics and bone broth as well as water. Hopefully Raven can feel as healthy as possible whilst providing nutrient rich milk for her puppies.
I am not only proud of Raven but the pack as well. They were impeccably well behaved whilst Raven was in labour- they never made a sound, entertained themselves and remained beautifully settled. It's like they were expectant dads and family members waiting on a labour ward with the way they looked at me every time I popped in to check on them. Alaska was the most interested and I am looking forward to seeing her interact with her full siblings in a month or so. She is very good at socialising our puppies and it is very special knowing they are her full siblings.
I had so many ideas on what to write for this blog post but my tired brain is making it difficult to remember. Although I am tired, I cannot sleep or nap through the day. I have everyone to care for and it's me doing everything for everyone. I couldn't sleep even if I wanted to as I have to keep awake for Raven and the puppies. If something happened because I fell asleep then it would haunt me for the rest of my life. I am managing to get enough rest to do what I need to and I can do it well. I feel like Raven's personal assistant and waitress and she deserves 5 star treatment. These puppies are here because of my decision making and I promise to do my very best by them and Raven.
I say it with every litter- but I am super excited to get to know them and to socialise them! I will work through my list of outdoor places, go to new places with the same social benefits to the puppies and I will prepare them for life ❤️
